Efavir is an antiviral drug that inhibits the replication of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cells in the body. It is utilized in the treatment of HIV, the virus responsible for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Efavirenz does not cure HIV or AIDS. Additionally, Efavir might be prescribed for other indications not specified in this medication guide.

Efavir can lead to severe psychiatric effects such as confusion, intense depression, suicidal ideation, aggression, extreme anxiety, hallucinations, or abnormal behavior. If you experience any of these side effects, even if they have occurred before, contact your doctor immediately.

Do not take Efavir without informing your doctor if you are pregnant, as it could be harmful to the fetus. While on Efavir and for at least 12 weeks post-treatment, use two methods of birth control, including a barrier method (like condoms or a diaphragm with spermicide). Notify your doctor if you become pregnant during treatment.

Do not combine Efavir with cisapride, pimozide, midazolam, triazolam, or ergot medications such as dihydroergotamine (D.H.E. 45), ergonovine, ergotamine, or methylergonovine. These medications may result in life-threatening side effects when taken with Efavir.

Many other medications may interact with Efavir or diminish its effectiveness. Inform your doctor about all prescription and over-the-counter drugs you are taking, including vitamins, minerals, herbal supplements, and any medications prescribed by other healthcare providers. Avoid starting any new medication without your doctor’s approval.

Using Efavir will not prevent HIV transmission to others. Discuss with your doctor safe practices for preventing HIV spread during sexual activity. It is never safe to share drug or medical needles, even if you are healthy.

Side effects may include mild nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea or constipation; coughing; blurred vision; headaches, dizziness, fatigue; difficulty concentrating, balance or coordination issues; muscle or joint discomfort; sleep disturbances (insomnia), unusual dreams; or alterations in body fat distribution, notably in the arms, legs, face, neck, breasts, and waist.
